The Armenian Genocide: Legal and ideological Aspects (Veranstaltung auf Englisch)

The Armenian Genocide, perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923, was one of the first genocides of the 20th century. This atrocity involved the systematic extermination of approximately 1.5 million Armenians, leading to the near annihilation of the entire Armenian population in its historic homeland. Despite overwhelming historical evidence, denial of the Armenian Genocide persists, particularly by the Republic of Turkey. Germany, an ally of the Ottoman Empire during World War I, officially recognized the genocide only in 2016.

On 6 and 8 November 2024, public events will be held in Hamburg and Potsdam, focusing on the legal and ideological aspects of the Armenian Genocide (1915-1923) and its role in Armenia's current culture of remembrance. Edita Gzoyan (director of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute Foundation) and Regina Galustyan (research associate at the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute Foundation) will deliver keynote speeches, followed by a panel discussion. With greetings from Dr. Oliver von Wrochem (director of the Foundation of Hamburg Memorials and Learning Centres) und Sandra Dahlke (director of the Max Weber Network Eastern Europe)

The event will be held in English and will be followed by a drinks reception. The event is being held in cooperation with the Max Weber Network Eastern Europe and the Helmut Schmidt University.

Location: Geschichtsort Stadthaus, Stadthausbrücke 6, 20355 Hamburg.
